Lens Awkward Sculpture
An irreverent, playful, and experimental attitude has long characterised the work of Bec Snelling, and this spirit has never been embodied so strongly as in the Awkward Sculpture. Warm and tactile rosewood is shaped into seemingly simple forms, arranged and stacked like a child playing with blocks. This simplicity belies a sophisticated engagement with contemporary technology, which was utilised to experiment with form, and allows for the Awkward Sculpture’s seemingly precarious composition. Constructed from CNC machine layered off-cuts of rosewood, an original silhouette originating from yoga’s camel pose - Utkatasana - was rotated and duplicated 360 degrees. The Awkward Sculpture’s presence in a space is dramatic and delightful.
